It is not surprising to enter an African home on a Sunday and see activity such as hot combing, hair threading or braiding.
I was delighted when Michelle Konadu organized a hair threading workshop and pop up salon. I took up the opportunity to be a hair model for the day, getting scalp scrubbed, hair conditioned and styled with thread.

The workshop took place at Palm Moments, Asylum Down, Accra. Where the space was turned into a pop up salon with products, hair stand, washing bay. Had great conversations with many sisters with all natural, weave, locs. Especially embracing my platinum hair strands.
Charlotte Mensah – A celebrity hairstylist and creative director of award winning salon – Hair Lounge in Portobello Road, London which opened in 2002. She presently has 7 products for sale and has written a book called Good Hair.

Scrub – She applied her Manketti Oil Salt scrub which felt uncomfortable as not had scalp scrubbed and epilage massaged at the same time. But as time went by it was ok. She advices to massage for at least 20mins every 10 days to remove dead skin cells, excess oil and product build up.
Don’t touch my hair – After rinsing, conditioning and washing. My hair felt clean, soft and lush. My curls were poppin’. Charlotte invited guests to come and touch my hair, which some hesitated at first. ummmm – There is a stigma about touching another black sisters hair without approval, as our hair is our crown and seen as a personal part of our body.
Hair Tradition – Hair threading and styles was a unique technique created by Africans. The thread is usually made from nylon, with sections of the hair threaded tightly from root to tip, to get a stiff strand that can be easily bent or twisted into a elaborate style.
My style – I wanted a mohawk style, with cane roll at the sides. It did not take long to create and was admired by all. Other Sisters had their hair also styled and with a few strands of threaded hair.
Had a great day of networking and being a hair model. Thanks for the gift bag and hair products. We look forward to more hair creative workshops.
