During The Ghana Cultural Experience 2019, I took 16 guests for a visit to Okurase DA Junior high school in Eastern Region of Ghana. Some of the school pupils were not wearing school uniform but different combination of sportswear. After speaking to the students most have interest in sporting activities especially athletics and football, but lack of uniformed sports kit has discouraged participation. However, the school have been champions for the inter school sports activities for Asikasu zone four times in a row. So, a suggestion made by the guests was to raise funds for the school sports kit via The Calabash Hub.
Through The Calabash Hub portal donations trickled in over a few years. We had a few delays due to Covid and other issues. But glad that we raised enough funds – give thanks to all who donated.
In July 2022 along with a science teacher Mr Asenso we went to Makola market in Accra and selected and purchase sports kits for 160 pupils. Each sports kit which consisted of a top and shorts cost 33 cedis. Total 5280 cedis (approx. £600)
The teachers at the school all agreed with the colour and design and were grateful to all who donated. A teacher selected a few students to wear and present to the whole school their new kit. They were delighted and appreciative the kindness and said they couldn’t wait to play with the uniform. The head teacher Mr Yaw will arrange for the school logo to be incorporated onto the kit.
We also purchased a new football, netball, handball for practice (total cost 700 cedis).
Let the school continue to win in colourful uniformed sports kits. We look forward to hearing about their first match when the school resumes in September.
