A hidden gem located in a forest of lush greenery of the Akuapem mountains near Pokrom the heart of Eastern region is Oboadaka Waterfall. Only 1 hour from Accra or 15 mins from Aburi. Oboadaka is the name of the town and also means ‘stone shape square ??

Road Trip – We set out early in the morning embarking on a road journey from Accra via the Aburi to the town of Oboadaka. We packed some fruits, snacks and refreshments for breakfast. A change of clothes, mat, towel. Those who know me, im not an early bird.

Waterfall – The waterfall is open all year round to the public and entrance is 20 cedis local and 40 cedis visitors. There are tour guides (contact 054 855 5805) to assist with the short hike through the forest.

The path has been maintained and the only tricky part was a slight downward slope pathed with slates for easier access. Whilst walking you can hear the roar of the waterfall and as soon as we were in view it was breathtaking. To get to the bottom of the waterfall area is about 13 steps.

Story or Myths – There is a large square stone used as a traditional shrine in the forest. The story is that the river spirit Gugu lives up the stream. It is said that Nsakye forbid people to farm or honour the waterfall on Thursdays. If the command was disobeyed a spell would be cast for the to get lost in the forest and unable to locate their way home.

Meditation – Affirmations –Being surrounded by mami wata is a relaxing space in nature and where I am most attracted to and at peace. The water at the bottom of the waterfall is known to have healing powers, so is used for bathing and to make offerings. We took the opportunity to honour our ancestors with libation and offerings, then brought forth affirmations and manifested our wishes.

RelaxationTo get to the base of the waterfall we walked through the shallow pool carefully walking over rocks until we sat and chilled on a large rock.

The water was cold and beat our backs but very therapeutic. We just chilled whilst listening to the birds, taking in fresh air and rejuvenating with nature and the sounds of the rustling water.

Surrounding area – We were told there is an eating place called Stomach Clinic. But it is also good idea to bring your own food if planning to stay a while.

It is known the best time to visit a waterfall is during the rainy season (June-August). But this year the rain in Ghana has not been the best. But we took a chance although beginning of October and was not disappointed as the current was still strong.

Out of Accra – Looking for that escape from the hustle and bustle of life, then Oboadaka waterfall is a tranquil wellness retreat.

There are other waterfalls in the Akuapim mountain called Adom and Amasaman  that are also very nice.
