Ga Samai (Ga symbols) are the symbols related to the Ga-Adangbe people of Ghana. These symbols and their meaning promote and define the rich traditional background of the Ga people. That define a role in the culture, set of beliefs, life experiences, community. Proverbs and statements. Intricate meanings and cultural significance, stories and traditions each symbol carries from generations past.

The World Folklore Day by the National folklore board (IG:folkloregh) of Ghana – 22nd August, took place at the National Theatre.

Book Launch
The main activity was the launch of the 2nd edition of the Ga Samai book written by Dr Richard Afutu Kotei. He has created his own unique set of symbols with expressions of wisdom of Ga. This book aids the understand and be familiar of the language of the wise. Also to use messages predicted in the symbols in conversation, education and solutions. We were also gifted with two Ga Samai branded exercise books.

Exhibition. Around the room was a display of the Ga Samai collection.

Speeches – There was great speeches of the importance of creating, preserving and using symbols in life situations to solve problems, as proverbs for conversation and teaching.

Symbols. The books are overwhelming with symbols. But symbol – Tsene caught my attention as the name of my organisation is called The Calabash Hub. So obvious I would gravitate to anything with a calabash bowl.

Tsene – Meaning – The way you present your calabash or food bowl to the serving table with determine how you will be served. The way you present yourself in life will determine how you will be perceived.

At a sip and paint I was inspired to paint the Tsene symbol on canvas to use as a wall hanging.

3 calabash. Every life calabash set has its own lid. There is a perfect match to everything. To every problem there is a specific and unique solution. Part of a prayer recited at the beginning of the new year, the day after the homowo festival. A prayer for peace, prosperity and protection from all dangers that may come their way in the course of the new year.

I have always informed people that there is not just the Adinkra Symbols which are very common in Ghana, as promoted more. But the Ga’s and Ewe also have symbols.

It was an enjoyable event where I look forward to learning about the new symbols.
Bless Sister E
